Renewi partnered with TCS for a new milestone: the design, build, and installation of a heavy-duty overhead crane at their Roeselare site. This marked the first time Renewi entrusted TCS with the delivery of a crane, highlighting a deepened confidence in TCS’s engineering and execution capabilities.
The crane operates in a highly corrosive and abrasive indoor environment, where fly ash from waste incineration — known for its aggressive and dusty properties — is sorted and manipulated before transport. These fly ashes are the residual particles left after combustion and require safe, stable handling due to their hazardous nature.
To meet Renewi’s operational and safety demands, TCS delivered a double girder overhead crane with a span of 17.72 meters and a lifting capacity of 5 tonnes. The system is equipped with a hydraulic grab and a custom rope guiding system to ensure precise, smooth movements with minimal swinging — critical in environments dealing with volatile waste materials.
One of the most remarkable features of this crane is its fully equipped operator cabin. Mounted directly on the crane, the cabin includes:
- A pressurization system to prevent corrosive particles and dust from entering the space;
- Built-in electric panels for centralized control, requiring extra shielding due to the harsh ambient conditions;
- An ergonomic control seat, ensuring full visibility and comfort for the operator during all crane movements.
Designed to withstand temperatures ranging from -10°C to +40°C, the system was engineered with fail-safe components, protective structures, and fully integrated safety controls — all in compliance with the most stringent standards.
Replacing an outdated 1999 crane that had become too costly to maintain, this new installation represents a major leap forward in terms of durability, operator safety, and environmental reliability.
